Human Trafficking Class Set for Thursday

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and in observance the Compass Center for Families will present UPRISING’s Human Trafficking and Exploitation Caregiver class this Thursday in Buffalo.

The training is designed to give adults the knowledge and tools for prevention, how to know the signs of, and how to talk to youth about human trafficking and exploitation.

Terri Markham, Co-Founder and Co-Director of UPRISING, said the class is for those wanting to help protect others from exploitation.

They will focus on what human trafficking looks like, especially in small towns where it may be different than in big cities.

Stories will be shared that have happened in Wyoming.

Protective factors for youth will be a major portion of the discussions, according to Markham.

UPRISING is a non-profit organization founded by Markham and Alexandra Stevenson for education and awareness of the human trafficking and exploitation problem, which happens everywhere, even Wyoming.

Markham said she realized after moving to Wyoming that the state is way behind the rest of the country in enacting human trafficking laws and there aren’t very many people talking about education, prevention and awareness of the issue.

Markham said since UPRISING’s inception last summer, they have educated more than 500 people in their classes.

The class in Buffalo will be Thursday from noon to 2pm at the Johnson County Library, and is recommended for those 18 and older.
