As more and more electrical vehicles start to make their way onto the highways, WYDOT has been taking public opinion on how to accommodate those who will be driving a zero emission vehicle.

Wyoming will soon receive National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funds to use to facilitate electric vehicle infrastructure development, especially charging stations, around the state.

Luke Reiner is the director of WYDOT, which has had a number of public meetings all over the state to develop some sort of plan.

He says there’s been a lot of interest from cities, towns and businesses in regards to how they can modify things to get a piece of the pie.

“There’s about $25 million coming from the Federal Government in this National Electrical Vehicle Infrastructure Program for the next 5 years and I think as we look at investing that amount of dollars on our roadways, we really need to look before we leap and we need to have a concrete plan to sort of know where we’re going.”

Wyoming’s interstates have been designated as “Alternative Fuel Corridors” and under the NEVI program must have infrastructure installed first.

Once the interstate corridors are complete, remaining funding can be spent along other key routes to popular destinations such as Yellowstone National Park and Devil’s Tower National Monument.
