Due to the threat of an approaching snowstorm, one of Wyoming’s most scenic and highest roadways has shut down for the season, a few days ahead of schedule.

As of 8am on Thursday, October 7th, US Highway 212 over the Beartooth Pass in northwest Wyoming, is closed to motor vehicle traffic until next summer.

It was scheduled to close on Tuesday, October 12th, but with the approaching weather system, road crews from Yellowstone National Park and the Montana Department of Transportation decided to move up the closure date, as a precaution to any motorists that may be in the area.

The closure area is between 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US Highway 212 and Wyoming State Highway 296, to about 12 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana.

That section of highway gets up to almost 11,000 feet above sea level.

Too much snow combined with too little traffic, makes snow plowing efforts on the highway impractical, hence the highway is closed.

It is anticipated to be plowed and reopened by Memorial Day weekend of next year.
