Sheridan city officials remain concerned about the impact of the COVID pandemic on businesses.

Sheridan City Administrator Stuart McRae elaborated at this week’s legislative forum.

He said that could include more stringent policies that require shutdowns because of COVID-19. McRae said the city last month established a policy requiring employees to wear masks. The city also encourages the public to comply.

He said the city is also cancelling some social events because of concerns over COVID. Those include a chili cookoff normally held in October and the city’s annual employee recognition event in December.

“He said that could include more stringent policies that require shutdowns because of COVID-19.” The city administrator, an unelected city employee, nor the elected council/mayor have the authority to do this. The county health officer does, if approved by the crown in Cheyenne. Yikes, I was all for having a city administrator but maybe Roger Miller had a point about this position. Maybe this was just a misunderstanding in the wording of this brief article, but Stu does not have the legal authority to “shut down” any businesses over a public health crisis. I wear a mask in public because it’s the right thing to do, but what is wrong is to perceive or insinuate that a city administrator has the authority to order anyone to do anything about our current situation.
