New Exhibits, Reception at Brinton Museum

On May 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Brinton Museum, in Big Horn, there will be an artists’ reception for artists Martin Garhart, and artist Greg Scheibel, whose exhibits, titled, Seen & Said: The Art of Martin Garhart will be on display from May 11 to August 25, 2024, and the exhibit New Work by Landscape by artist Greg Scheibel will be on display from May 8 to June 6, 2024. It is free and open to the public.

Garhart’s show represents the culmination of more than 20 years of studio work on a series of 28 paintings titled Oil Paintings and Oil Poems and a series of 19 watercolors which he calls Watercolor Poems.

Martin Garhart has worked as an artist and teacher, making and showing his art over the last fifty-plus years. He has held two Ucross Foundation Artist in Residencies. His works reside in over 40 institutions including the British Museum, Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institute, as well as numerous private collections.

He is a Professor of Art Emeritus from Kenyon College, in Gambier, Ohio where he taught Studio Art. Having grown up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, he now splits his time between his cabin/studio in the Black Hills and his home/studio in Powell, Wyoming. Seen & Said: The Art of Martin Garhart continues through August 25.

Another exhibit is New Work by Landscape, new paintings by Bozeman, Montana artist Greg Scheibel which will be on display in the Northern Trust Gallery beginning May 8.

Scheibel has always felt a strong connection to the outdoors. Throughout his life he has spent a great deal of time hiking, fishing, backpacking, and closely observing his surroundings, which has led to a deep appreciation for the remote locations and unspoiled beauty of the West, which is the main inspiration for his paintings. Greg paints on location as much as possible, trying to capture an honest record of the values, color, and feel of an area.

The emotional connection to nature which is a result of these studies, is the foundation for his work. He is a signature member of The Oil Painters of America, the NWR (Northwest Rendezvous Group of Artists), The Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, the Montana Painters Alliance, and an Out of State Artist Member of the California Art Club. His work has garnered numerous awards, and he has been featured in a number of magazines, including Art of the West, Western Art Collector, Southwest Art, Distinctly Montana, Plein Air Magazine, and Big Sky Journal. Greg Scheibel’s exhibition at The Brinton Museum is sponsored by First Bank of Wyoming.
