It’s hard to have a sporting event without a referee and the Sheridan YMCA is looking for a few people to put on the striped shirt.
The Y is looking for volunteer refs to work 2nd and 3rd grade boys and girls basketball games in gym number 3.
The boys practice on Mondays and play games on Wednesdays, while the girls have Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Sessions run from 4 until 7pm all 4 days and teams use a short court and not a full regulation court.
While on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse Program, YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday said referees don’t need much experience, but need to know the basic rules of the game, without getting too serious.
“It’s just making sure the kids are having fun, it’s not getting too rough, you keep track of time, you show them how to throw in the ball, and it’s really fast and furious 32 minutes, if you need a few extra steps in your day, but don’t expect to see too many formal plays.”
Cassiday says games are 4 8-minute quarters, and will take a little less than 1 hour overall.
