In a work session that preceded the monthly SCSD#3 board meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 10, Activities Director Jennifer Betz reported to the board that she had consulted with Junior and Senior High students on rewriting the dress code.

Superintendent Boyd Brown added that he felt removing hats was a sign of respect.

Betz said she will continue to work with the students on revising the dress code, and that the students felt a dress code for prom should be included, as it is for graduation.

Brown said he appreciated the work Betz has done, and was glad that the students gave their input as well.

Rindy West, Ag in the Classroom, speaks to the board

Guest Rindy West, of Agriculture in the Classroom, gave a presentation about the program, and passed out the curriculum for the board to look over with the thought of SCSD#3 adding Ag in the Classroom into their curriculum. West mentioned that Ag in the Classrooms encourages students to be good stewards of Wyoming lands.

The board adjourned the work session at 6:15 and Stephanie Buhr and Amy Rowe were present to update the school board on the Clear Creek Recreation District.

In rec district news, Buhr said that they are selling punch cards for members to access the rec district facilities. A $10 punch card gives a member 12 visits, while a $20 card is good for 25 visits.

Also discussed during rec district meeting, were ways to get more members by adding new activities. Trustee Wade Betz suggested perhaps the district should hold a Bingo night.

Trustee Chris Schock suggested maybe the rec district to find a dog trainer and have a dog training class. This was suggested due to the fact that there was an unruly dog in the rec center, which lead the Rec. District to institute a ‘no dogs in the building’ policy,’

Amy Rowe said that the Nov. 20th Holiday Bazaar will be held in the high school instead of in the rec center.

Ronnie Poppenga, Clearmont Town Council member, reported that the water tank is now ready and is being filled.

The board also discussed the upcoming WSBA Conference on Nov. 17-19 in Casper. Some of the resolutions discussed was one asking the WSBA to allow schools to take out the requirement to teach a foreign language in grade school. Many board members felt that unless you keep up on a foreign language you lose it and they felt it was not necessary for it to be included in grade schools. They felt the early grade curriculum should be mainly reading and writing and math. The board voted to approve the resolution.

Another one set standards on retention of staff, but many of the board members felt that each school should be able to decide on what standards were needed and what might be appropriate for each school’s staff.

Coaching was one subject discussed, and Trustee Wade Betz felt that when he took the class to be a coach, much of what was required was not applicable to his coaching Junior High athletics.

The most discussed resolution was 2023.4, social studies transparency and access and public input on the curriculum, and that local school boards should have control over the curriculum, not the state or the federal government. Trustee Betz felt that the language should include other subjects, such as English, as the controversial CRT program could be taught through an English class as well.

Betz will be the SCSD#3 representative to the WSBA, and he can express his concerns and vote on the measures there, as per the recommendations made by the SCSD#3 board. Several other board members also plan to attend the conference.

Meeting adjourned into executive session at 8:20. Next meeting will be on Dec. 8th at 7 p.m.
