The Sheridan Police Department partners with the Drug Enforcement Administration to host a Drug Take Back Day sometimes twice a year.

This year, the Drug Take Back Day will be held at 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Walmart parking lot.

This DEA sponsored event is being hosted by the Sheridan PD to allow any resident the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or unwanted prescription drugs.

Sheridan PD Lieutenant Travis Koltiska explains.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Koltiska and SCPD Evidence Technician Nate Dygon told listeners about the upcoming event and requested residents turning in syringes, place them in a safe needle proof container before dropping them in the Take Back box.

At the conclusion of Take Back Day, the drugs will be turned over to an DEA agent from Cheyenne who will transport them to an incinerator to be disposed of safely.

The PD is asking that drugs in pressurized aerosol form (inhalers) or cancer fighting drugs not be put into the Take Back Day box as they create a hazard when incinerated. Cancer fighting drugs are often radioactive and pose a threat to officers and agents during handling.

In the event a resident cannot make it to the Take Back Day event, Dygon told listeners they may drop unused or unwanted drugs at the Sheridan Police Department at any time.
