The Arvada-Clearmont School held a community listening session on April 22, the topic of conversation was renovations of the school gymnasium. Assistant Principal Jennifer Betz presented a slide show with some ideas for re-doing the gym walls.

She said they have been having some feedback and conversations about what could be done to improve the look of the gym.

One thing that the school felt was necessary was to replace the old bleachers with more ADA approved bleachers with handrails. the current bleachers were built before the ADA rules and were grandfathered in.

There was also discussion about ordering new bleachers with back rests, but the cost was prohibited for that type of bleacher. Stadium seats, which could be loaned out at each event, were suggested as well.

There was discussion about the color of the bleachers, and many of those attending agreed that the gym was currently too bright, and black, rather than blue or gold, for the bleachers seemed the best option.

Repainting the walls gray was suggested to bring down the brightness some.

Betz suggested to add the “Six Houses, One Claw” crests on one wall.

She passed out a handout of what each house means. “The houses are a way of building communities of multi-grades, 7-12.” Betz said. “We’re using it as a positive motivator, to reinforce positive behavior in the school.”

Jolene Poppenga, SCSD#3 Secretary, mentioned the championship banners now on the walls could be digitized and displayed on a rotating basis on a large screen television in the gym. One comment was that the banners should list the team members from that year.

Fund-raising for the project was a topic of discussion as well. This will be an on-going project, and other discussions will be held on the topic.
