Filing is open for those who want to seek federal, state, county or local offices this year.

Sheridan County Clerk Eda Schunk Thompson said filing started Thursday and will continue through May 29. Thompson said those wishing to seek county offices have a new option this year.

Schunk said the online filing option was added after she determined credit card information could be taken over the phone.

She said those seeking county offices or seeking election as precinct committee people file with the election office at the Sheridan County Courthouse. There is a $25 filing fee for county office, no fee for precinct committee positions.

Those seeking state and federal offices file with the Secretary of State’s office, and those seeking positions on the city or town councils file with the clerks in their respective city or towns.

Primary elections are on Aug. 18 this year.

As of Friday, only one candidate had filed for a county or municipal position. Lonnie J. Wright of Big Horn filed on Thursday for one of the two seats up for election on the Sheridan County commission.

Positions on the three county school boards of trustees, the Northern Wyoming Community College District and the Sheridan County Conservation District are also up for election this year, but Schunk said candidates for those offices won’t file until August.

She said the filing dates for those offices will be Aug. 5 through Aug. 24, and all candidates for those offices will be posted only on the November election ballots.

What if they held an election….and nobody came?
    Would we all become self-governing?

In Fact, America was founded as the first, truly “self-governing” country. We valued individual liberty above all and created a limited, self-governing republic to secure our freedom. Enumerated powers in the constitution divided our government into thirds, pitted it against itself and “chained it down” by a written constitution of law, not men. All to insure that gov’t never imposed on our Individual Liberty. Of course the word “democracy” appeared not a single time in the Declaration or Constitution. My posted observation was a reflection of the few number of candidates filing, so far. It was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Sorry it was miss-interpreted, but par for the course, I guess. Self-government does not mean anarchy or violence. Self-gov’t is truly a brilliant achievement of our Founders and simply means we are all free and personally responsible. We get the gov’t we deserve and that is especially true if no one steps up to shoulder the responsibility of Liberty. Taking pot-shots is easy, fighting for freedom, takes courage and effort.
