School District 1 Trustees Accept Preliminary Budget

Sheridan County School District 1 is projecting expenditures of about $16.9 million in the year that starts on July 1, including around $16.2 million for brick-and-mortar facilities and about $700,000 for the district’s virtual academy.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the school district’s trustees, Business Manager Jeremy Smith said this will be the fourth year for the virtual academy.

Smith said the virtual academy started the year with 80 students and has grown to around 113, and the district anticipates serving around 185 students next year.

He said the revenues from this year will support the full cost of the students expected next year.

Trustees accepted rather than adopted the preliminary budget Tuesday. They will adopt a final budget during a meeting on the third Wednesday in July.

Smith said he didn’t anticipate any significant differences between the budget presented Tuesday night and the final budget to be considered at the July meeting.

Smith said overall, he anticipates revenues will be strong in the coming year, and the district’s reserves are strong. In addition, he said, District 1 is growing in the numbers of students that are served.
