The SCSD#3 School Board met on Tuesday, Oct. 8, with several items on the agenda. There was one visitor, Shannon Duncan, who asked if the school board would consider moving the High School graduation ceremony up one hour, from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m., to allow her to attend the graduation in Buffalo on the same day. The board will discuss the change and make a decision at a future meeting.

Jennifer Betz, Activities and Athletic director, talked about what’s happening during the first two months of the school year.

She said that volleyball season was in full swing, and there was a couple of sixth graders who wanted to wrestle at Buffalo school, and she is working with the school transportation department about taking the athletes to Buffalo for practices.

Mike Buss, director of maintenance, reported on several projects, such as the boiler, lights along the walkway, and the need for a re-do of the irrigation system. He talked about ways to make the school healthier as well.

Mike Guyer, transportation director, reported that he is doing maintenance on the buses to make sure they are all safe and ready for the school year.

The board approved the application for the school protein enhancement project grant through the state.

Superintendent Chase Christensen,

He added that the board had discussed the possibility of donated beef last year, but the processing costs were still higher than they currently pay for hamburger, so the idea was set aside for later discussion.

If the school received grant monies to pay for even half of the processing, they may take another look at obtaining donated or discounted beef from local sources.

The board voted to hire Jim Fennema as the assistant girls’ basketball coach for the upcoming season as well.

Also discussed was the superintendent evaluation, and the board held an executive session to discuss the evaluation.

The Clear Creek Recreation District had asked the board to consider a request for them to use the school gym for a donkey basketball game if the tickets sold for the game exceeded the capacity of the CCRD gym.

The board discussed the event, but Christensen felt that driving attendance over to the rec district gym would help to promote the rec district.

Trustees Deborah Guyer and Trinity Lewis had this exchange.

Christensen and Lewis added,

Christensen reported that Landon’s will be bringing down the trees tomorrow, Oct. 10, and planting will be done on Wednesday and Thursday. The trees are being planted to beautify the school area, as well as provide shade for the west facing school rooms to help keep them cooler in the fall and late spring.
