At the cemetery tour on Tuesday, August 20 at Fort Phil Kearny, Site Superintendent Shari Shada talked about an upcoming event at the fort.

The event is Archaeology Day, to be on Saturday, August 24 beginning at 10 a.m. and running until noon.

Shada explains,

The event will begin with an overview of Wyoming prehistory by Dave McKee, visitors can then journey through activity stations at their leisure to learn more. Stations include: An Artifact Identification Table – Staffed by Dr. Cody Newton, bring your stone tools for an analysis: Dig Boxes for Kids of all ages; a Flint Knapping Station with Rick Laurent to learn how prehistoric arrowheads and other stone tools were made.; An Ethnobotany Booth with Dan Bach of Wyoming State Parks & Cultural Resources. Attendees can learn how wild plants were used for medicinal care; and the Atlatl (At-latal) Toss with Dave McKee in the Fort pasture where participants can practice atlatl dart target shooting. An atlatl is a tool used by ancient humans to propel spears and darts with accuracy.

Shada mention that while you are visiting make sure to stop in the visitor center to check out the wide selection of items in the newly remodeled gift store and get a look at the status of construction of the new interpretive display wing.
