Ron RichterProperty taxes in Wyoming continue to increase at astronomical levels. In March, Governor Mark Gordon signed into law a number of property tax relief bills that were approved by the Wyoming Legislature during the budget session earlier this year. The two candidates running in the Republican primary for the Wyoming House of Representatives District 30 seat are Gail Symons and Tom Kelly. The candidates, while guests on Friday’s open line program, were asked to offer their thoughts on the property tax issue in Wyoming. Kelly had this to say.
Symons said the State Legislature passed four property tax relief bills this past session.
We’ll conclude our series with the House District 30 candidates in a future story where we’ll hear each candidate explain why they are the right person for the position.

The current tax system amounts to taxing us for “un-realized capital gains.” By that I mean it taxes your property more because your neighbor sold his house for an actual capital gain increase, so your home’s value and taxes, both go up. Even though you didn’t see any “gain” in your actual home value, because you didn’t sell or profit from your neighbors sale. But your taxes still go up.
It’s the very definition of “un-realized gain” and unfair to all property owners.
Acquisition-based may not be perfect, but it’s way better than the current flawed system.
BTW, my property tax is going up 582%, in a single year, because I took the initiative to improve my home. I bought all local materials and poured a ton of sweat-equity into improving my property.
My reward is to pay a boatload more money to the gov’t.
Guess that’ll show me!
Can anyone in the county top my annual percentage increase, or do I hold the county % tax record?
