On Wednesday evening, July 24, 2024, Trail End Historic Site will host the 10th annual Evening at the Mansion, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. Those attending can relax in the shade with friends and family or enjoy a game of barefoot badminton in the thick, cool grass. They can bring a picnic supper and enjoy it under the trees to the accompaniment of live music. Add to this free admission to Trail End, and you’ve got a perfect evening’s entertainment.

The Kendrick Mansion will be open to visitors at no charge from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with staff and volunteers on hand to answer questions.

Trail End, also known as the Kendrick Mansion, cost around $165,000 when it was built in the early 1900s. In today’s money that would be around 5 million dollars. One ad from the Sheridan Real Estate Company from 1908, advertised an 8-room house with bath, pantry and closets, was priced at $2400. A four-bedroom house with city water and electric lights was $1600.

Trail End was and is something special, inside and out. Everything was the best for the time. The mansion is a little under 14,000 square feet with thirty plus rooms, three floors plus a basement.

The home was built in the Flemish Revival style, recognizable by the presence of curvilinear gables. It is a mix of the Flemish elements and the Neoclassical style including columns, pediments and balustrades. Located on a hill over-looking the town, Trail End is a landmark in Sheridan.

Badminton and croquet are set up on the lawn, where you can challenge your best buds to a friendly game or two. While cookies and lemonade are available – courtesy of Trail End volunteers – everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and make an evening of it.

Live music is presented on the south porch, so bring a lawn chair and enjoy the concert.
