Ron RichterA disposition hearing was held recently in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan for a man who admittedly violated the terms of his probation. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
n December of 2020, Cory Morton was arrested and charged with eight counts of felony forgery for issuing checks from a closed checking account that once belonged to his deceased father. The checks were issued at three different businesses in Sheridan. On November 4, 2021, Morton was sentenced in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan to 4 to 6 years in prison for each of the eight counts, suspended in lieu of a 180-day split-sentence and three years of supervised probation.
An adjudication hearing was held January 23, 2024 in District Court on the State’s motion to revoke Morton’s probation for violating the terms and conditions of his probation. At the hearing, Morton’s probation officer testified that he’d tested positive for methamphetamine numerous times, failed to show up for several drug tests, did not keep in regular contact with her, and failed to keep his ankle monitor charged. District Court Judge Darci Phillips ruled that Morton willfully and substantially violated the terms and conditions of his probation and ordered his probation revoked.
At a disposition hearing in District Court this past Thursday, Judge Phillips, citing Morton’s lengthy criminal history and his lack of compliance while on probation, imposed the underlying sentence of 4 to 6 years in prison to be served at Wyoming Department of Corrections facility. Morton received 360 days of credit for time served.
