cvannoySCSD#1 board of trustees had several recognitions at the Tuesday, Feb. 20 meeting. In honor of “National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day”, SCSD#1 Superintendent Jeff Jones said,
Big Horn High School raised money for the family of the fallen officer. In his student representative report from Big Horn High School Isaac Adsit said,
Tongue River Middle School gave the board a presentation about what they have been doing with math and reading, Principal Jennifer Fiedor and Ashley Mines of TRMS talked about how early intervention helps the students a great deal.
They also talked about several ways they are promoting a healthy culture and climate in the school, and they recognized students who go ‘above and beyond’ what they school expects of them.
One upcoming event will be the Hero Fair, where 7th and 8th grade students choose a heroic person or event to research and write a paper about. They will also dress up as their hero and give a speech portraying their hero and the impact they have made.
Robitics teacher Brett Schwieder talked about the robotics team at TRMS, and displayed some of the robotic pieces the team had made. There is also a fund raiser at Tongue River to help the Schwieder family as they battle cancer.
There was a presentation by Jeremy Smith, business manager and Josh Law, of Only Co, who talked about ways to create funding sources for projects that enhance extracurricular activities at SCSD#1, such as the Robitics program, the Teton Science Fair, and the artificial turf on the athletics fields.
Smith said he felt they had to get out in front of the project, he said the turf fields are great, but they get old and can be expensive to replace. Law had several ideas including forming groups similar to booster clubs to raise funds for special projects.
There was some discussion about the importance of extracurricular activities and benefits that can be gained by students participating in them. Chairman Clint Krumm gave the student representatives a ‘homework’ assignment, they were encouraged to ask students about extracurricular activities and how they benefit from them.
Jason Lund of Carver Florek & James, CPA’s, spoke on the recent audit and said that SCDS#1 had a good audit. He thanked the SCSD#1 staff for doing a good job of bookkeeping for the district.
Krumm also referenced an article in the February issue of the American School Board Journal about student representatives at the school boards.
In other business the board voted new board member Morgan Stalick as treasurer to take the place of Chad Baker, who moved away. She will also take Baker’s place on the recreation district board.
