Driver fatigue is being investigated as a contributing factor in a fatal single vehicle rollover on I-90 in the Lake DeSmet area in northern Johnson County.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol says shortly after 2am on Friday (October 20th), troopers were called to the scene on I-90 at milepost 49, where they found a purple 2004 Dodge pickup in a ditch.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 43-year old Cory Loerch from Shoshoni, who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
The Patrol says Mr. Loerch was westbound on I-90 in a flat and straight area, when his vehicle drifted off the road to the right and entered the ditch.
The vehicle then struck a delineator post on the front driver’s side and he continued westbound for about 384 feet, paralleling the roadway.
Mr. Loerch then steered to his left and struck another delineator post as his vehicle moved back onto the roadway.
He then crossed the right lane and into the left lane, then overcorrected back to the right and was on the road for approximately 444 feet.
The vehicle began to rotate clockwise, entering a broadside, driver-leading slide, and entered the ditch, where it tripped and rolled,
Mr. Loerch was ejected from the vehicle upon the first rotation.
His vehicle continued to roll, approximately 3 ¼ times, going through the right-of-way fence and through some brush and small trees into the bottom of a shallow draw, coming to rest on the passenger side.
There’s no word on if Mr. Loerch was wearing his seat-belt or not.
This is a third fatality on this stretch of highway in 4 days.
On Monday (October 16th) two women were killed in a single vehicle rollover on I-90 at the Piney Creek Road exit, which is about 5 miles further westbound.
