Plans for clean-up and reclamation of the old Acme Power Plant site continue, but when it’s all finished, one big thing will no longer be there.

The Sheridan County Conservation District has announced once asbestos clean-up is completed, the Power Plant building will be deconstructed and efforts will be made to see if pieces of the building can be used elsewhere.

District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski says the District explored as many options as they could to try to salvage or re-purpose that building, but portions of the roof have collapsed and some of the walls inside are unstable.

Keeping the building up and maintaining it could cost more than it’s worth.

“There just wasn’t a feasible reuse identified that was economically feasible, feasible from a safety stand-point, long term maintenance, there was no clear direction of anything that would retain that building as a complete structure.”

While asbestos may not be covering every square inch of the building, Rogaczewski says it still has to be thoroughly cleaned, before any deconstruction or demolition work starts for environmental and health reasons, plus it’s cheaper in the long run compared to taking the building apart without cleaning it.

She adds she is hopeful that bid requests for asbestos removal within the building can start soon, and the actual work could start in the fall.
