It’s a grand old flag and it’s been 246 years since the US started having one of its own.

The first flag was adopted on June 14th, 1777, but the holiday to celebrate its origin didn’t start until President Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916.

In Sheridan, members of the American Legion, the VFW and Disabled American Veterans honored Flag Day with a traditional flag retirement ceremony.

A flag is supposed to be retired when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display.

Such conditions include having faded colors, as well as rips and tears that can be caused by the weather or normal wear and tear.

Dan Love who represents the Legion, VFW and the DAV, explains what the flag is all about.

Dan Love

“The flag is a symbol of all of those who have given their freedom, or their lives in the name of our country’s freedom. I believe flag education is something that should be taught to the public in schools and in everyday life. If people have questions, there are brochures that show in great detail, proper flag etiquette.”

Flag Day, or June 14th, is also the birthday of the U.S. Army.
