The Sheridan area doesn’t have much in terms of weight loss surgery, but that’s about to change.

Recently the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Board Of Trustees approved a motion for the hospital to provide bariatric surgery and services.

The procedure alters gut hormone levels responsible for hunger leading to a new hormonal weight set point.

Doctor Josh Scott is a 1994 Sheridan High School graduate and made the proposal to the board and explains more about how the procedure works.

Dr. Josh Scott

“It changes a patient’s metabolism so that they do lose weight and do benefit from the weight loss with respect to the other diseases that come along with obesity, such as hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver disease, arthritis. It really kind of addresses all those other health issues that are related to obesity.”

The exact start date of the bariatric services is to be determined, because a number of legal requirements such as accreditation, and education of staff still needs to be met.
