Shelter produces better canines through new certificate program

The Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter has traditionally rehabilitated dogs that have shown aggressive or antisocial behavior in order to find a permanent family and home.
One of the secret weapons used by the shelter to achieve this is the owner and operator of the Unleashed Foundation, Marian Eccles.
Together with shelter Dog Lead, Emi Whiting, Eccles has helped to reorganize the program formerly known as Bite Club, into a new training program, Better Canine (BC).
While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Whiting and Eccles brought along Beetle, a two year old German Shepherd mix, who had completed the training.
The BC training provides a certificate that the dog must earn through a series of tested behaviors. This paperwork goes with the dog once they are adopted to their new home.
Eccles told listeners that a percentage of her work at the shelter involves training new staff members techniques to identify behaviors and handle the dogs.
