The recipient of the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award of Excellence is one of Sheridan’s newer businesses.

Red Bison Studio opened in downtown Sheridan in June 2018. Nicole Christensen, immediate past president of the Chamber’s board of directors, introduced the nominees for the Small Business award and recounted a little of Red Bison Studio’s history.

The Chamber Small Business Award of Excellence is presented to businesses with fewer than 20 full-time employees. The criteria include that the business maintains consistent growth and strong performance, understands its customer, has an engaged workforce with effective leadership and is continually innovating to support future growth.

Christensen noted that, by 2019, owner Stephen Mullins had hired additional employees and moved from Grinnell Plaza to a larger location on Main Street.

Mullins and his staff provide classes for those who want to learn the art of working with clay, including students from rural schools that don’t have their own ceramics programs.

The business also creates and manufactures several lines of ceramic mugs, plates, bowls and other dinnerware that’s sold retail in the Sheridan store and wholesale to locations around the country.
