The Bighorn National Forest’s Powder River District in Buffalo has a new ranger, effective at the end of January.

In a release, Bighorn National Forest Supervisor Andrew Johnson announced Thad Berrett was selected to serve as the new Powder River District Ranger.

He replaces Traci Weaver who left the position in June of 2021.

Berrett served as a Rangeland Management Specialist on the Powder River Ranger District over the last seven years, has experience in range management, and working with community partners.

His background includes working for the Idaho Department of Lands, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Forest Service in the Rocky Mountain and Intermountain Regions.

Berrett attended the University of Idaho, earning a degree in Range Livestock Management.

He has been married to his wife Becky for 16 years and they have two daughters.

Berrett said in the release, “I am looking forward to getting work done as the District Ranger on the Powder River Ranger District. I plan to be a voice for district employees and to work closely with the community on important issues.”

He will transition into his new role at the end of January.
