cvannoyJennifer Betz, ACHS school activities director, reported to the board Wednesday night that Tamica Smith was one to two Wyoming students attending Girl’s State who was selected to attend Girl’s Nation. Girl’s Nation, like Girl’s State, is a program where students can see first hand how government works. Smith will leave for Baltimore, MD, the end of the month. Smith is the daughter of Andy and Carla Smith.
Several parents approached the SCSD#3 board at the Wednesday night meeting to express concrerns about the resignation of volleyball coach Danette Brinkerhoff. James and Catherine Fennema, Shawna Michelena and Tawnya Odegard spoke about how much Brinkerhoff had helped their athletes through the year improve their game. A discussion followed about coaching and budget concerns, and how many the athletes a coach could be expected to coach.
Trustee Wade Betz noted that the school has to make some cuts, and he added, “We didn’t run Brinkerhoff off. But there have to be some cuts in our budget. We can’t predict what’s coming next year.”
Superintendent Charles Auzqui added that the board is not in charge of hiring, they go by the recommendation of the administration. The board voted to hire an assistant coach if over ten students signed up for a sport, the school would consider hiring an assistant coach. Parent volunteers were discussed, and volunteers must be approved by the head coach.
Misty Moore, trustee, in talking about parent volunteers said, “We have to be flexible. There might come a time we have to be drastically flexible.”
Maintenance man Jay Buhr reported that the irrigation pumps in the ditch are working fine and that he found a snake skin on the school property, and wanted everyone to be aware that it is snake season.
The school will no longer provide transportation to practice or other events that occur outside the days that school is in session. Parents must provide transportation for events otherwise. There will be no school sponsored overnight trips except to Regional and/or State Culminating events.
SCSD #3, will no longer provide insurance for students involved in activities.
Board also approved to hire Justin Hansen as K-12 general education/K-6 Special Ed/Library Paraprofessional.
Next meeting will be July 21 at 7 p.m.
