Sheridan College students to perform for elementary school children

Sheridan College Theater and Dance students will give a series of livestream performances for elementary school children this month.

The shows, to be presented Nov. 18-20, have been created for second to sixth grade students and are inspired by local history and legends.

The short performances will be livestreamed at 2 p.m. each day on Sheridan College’s YouTube channel. The presentations are free to the public.

According to a news release from the college, the Sheridan College Theater and Dance department is partnering with local elementary school teachers to incorporate the series into their schools’ Language Arts lessons, and the stories will be used to explore craft and structure in a set of follow-up educational activities provided to teachers and parents.

According to Sheridan College Theater instructor Lauren Griffen, this online experience will give children a new way of accessing the arts while protecting the health and safety of the community.

The series will start on Nov. 18 with “The Lonely Sea Monster of Lake DeSmet,” a performance intended for kindergarten through second-grade students. Later shows, intended for older children, will explore how a rug escaped the clutches of a dragon and ended up at Kendrick Mansion, and a mystery at a circus.
