A number of Sheridan High School students were recognized for achievements both in sports and academics at the Sheridan County School District 2 trustees’ meeting this week.

SHS Interim Principal Brian Lawson said nearly 30 SHS students were recognized for earning AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams. He continued.

In addition, Lawson introduced SHS student Kathryn Moran, who is a semi-finalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship program. Lawson said about 1.5 million high school juniors in the U.S. entered the 2021 program by taking the 2019 PSAT National Merit Scholarship qualifying test, which served as the initial screen of program entrants.

He said that number represents less than 1 percent of U.S high school seniors, which includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. About 15,000 semi-finalists are expected to advance to the finalist level. Finalists will be notified in February.

Also recognized during the meeting this week were the Girls’ No. 2 singles and Boys No. 3 doubles tennis state champions. High School Athletics Director Don Julian introduced them as well as the boys’ state champion golf team and the individual girls’ state golf champion.

The last time Sheridan High School boys have won a state golf championship was nine years ago.
