WYG&F: Tongue River Canyon Trail Reopened 

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has announced that the Tongue River Canyon Trail 002 and the associated trailhead at the Tongue River Canyon Public Access Area have been re-opened for public access, effective Sept. 23, 2026.

The trail had been closed beginning on Sept. 10, 2026 to allow U.S. Forest Service contractors to complete repair work on the trail, which was damaged by a rock slide in April 2026.

The closure was expected to last until early October, but the trail repairs were completed earlier than expected and personnel and equipment have been removed from the area.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation in respecting the closure, which allowed the work to be quickly and safely completed,” Game and Fish Sheridan Region Habitat and Access Coordinator Nathan Lindsey said. 

Trail 002 is on the Bighorn National Forest, but access to the trail from the trailhead is on Game and Fish Commission property and is part of the Tongue River Canyon Public Access Area.
