Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns Resource and Development Manager Dan Alsup and AmeriCorps Fire Team members Amber Hay and Sara Griggs made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse.
Hay and Griggs are both from North Carolina. Traveling and working with AmeriCorps has changed their directions in life with each one wishing to continue helping others through prospective career paths.
Although it has existed in some form since 1963, AmeriCorps was formed in 1993. An independent agency of the US Government, the agency enrolls more than 200,000 individuals to serve organizations making a difference in communities across America.
Recently a team of AmeriCorps volunteers have been giving their time to 501(c)3 organizations throughout Sheridan County, including Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Bighorns, the YMCA and Sheridan Community Land Trust.
Hay said she was questioning her next step after high school and working with the organization has opened new directions that she would like to take. It also gave her an opportunity to travel.

As well as helping communities they work in, the AmeriCorp team has opportunities to explore the regions in which they volunteer. Griggs took a hiatus from college, wishing to gain some perspective on life and travel. The work she has accomplished with AmeriCorp has changed her direction in school. Once her term of service is completed, she wishes to return to school, earn a degree in social work and return to one of the communities they have helped to serve in her time with the team.
Griggs recommends the service to anyone searching for a new direction or to serve one’s own community. She said the best place to start is by visiting AmeriCorps.gov.
