While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Lt. Devereaux Johnson and School Resource Officer Deputy Boot Hill talked about the scam that has people looking more closely at photos of items for sale.
The scam involves posting items for resale on various platforms, luring the victim into believing they will be receiving a good deal on the purchase. But the scammer informs the victims they must pay a “hold payment” on the item. But, according to Johnson, who openly admits he almost fell victim to one of these scams, there are no items and the victim loses the payment.
The Undersheriff was able to determine the sale was a scam. Others may not be so lucky. Deputy Hill said there are two red flags to watch out for when making any kind of deal online with those you have never met in person.
