SPD leadership debunk popular myths of local law enforcement

As long as there has been law enforcement, myths and assumptions have been linked to the practice. Some myths are unbelievable enough to be easily dismissed while other myths linger, sometimes for decades. 

Leadership and officers within the Sheridan Police Department are no strangers to the myths and assumptions that can and have been made regarding law enforcement and the policies they follow. 

In the interest of transparency, while appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, SPD Chief Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley took the time to discuss and either debunk or confirm myths that surround the department. 

One such myth revolves around the amount of citations issued by the officers of the SPD. The myth states that officers are given a required number of traffic citations they must issue in a given time period or face either disciplinary action or the possibility of being passed up for promotion.

Although the practice does exist elsewhere –a quick search of the internet will find many lawsuits connected to it– the Sheridan Police Department does not impose traffic or other citation quotas on its officers. Koltiska told listeners the practice does not improve the community and undermines the public’s trust.
