Sheridan Media continues the look at the year now drawing to a close. Sheridan Media reporter Pat Blair reviews the events of this past summer.

Although COVID-19 was dampening public gatherings, the death of a man in Minneapolis, Minn., in May brought at least 200 Sheridan residents together on June 5 in a march to protest the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd. The march was from Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library to the county courthouse, and one of the marchers, Danielle Arnoux explained what the protest was about.

George died on May 25 after a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.

COVID continued to dominate the news through the summer. On June 25, the state reported 36 new laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus, the largest single-day total in Wyoming since the state’s first case was reported in Sheridan County on March 11. The highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 residents came from Teton, Fremont and Uinta counties, and Governor Mark Gordon joined Wyoming Department of Health officials in recommending that people wear face coverings in public settings where physical separation wasn’t possible.

On July 21, 32-year-old Cody Zack faced multiple charges after allegedly assaulting an employee at Sheridan’s Walmart store. Zack fled the scene. According to information from the county sheriff, the sheriff’s office charged him with speeding, eluding and driving with a suspended driver’s license, and the Sheridan Police Department added battery, eluding and careless driving to the list.

On Aug. 13, the first COVID-19 related death was reported in Sheridan County. County Public Health Nurse Debra Haar told Sheridan Media the individual was from out of state and died at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At that time, the Wyoming Department of Health reported nearly 2,700 confirmed cases of the disease in the state and 30 deaths.

BLM is a marxist group that exploits the deaths of certain black people in order to push their radical agenda.

I agree. The way the matter was handled was a travesty. The way the career criminal was placed upon a pedestal and worshipped was beyond comprehension. Choose a real hero to idolize. Should the officer have continued to put pressure on his neck passed the point of unconsciousness? No. However, fault for the incident cannot be solely placed on him. The incident began with the breaking of the law and ended with the exploitation and subsequent division of an entire Country.

I thought this was a look back at local news. Reporting on local march for BLM–acceptable. A rehash of the incident concerning George Floyd, UNNECESARY. Please stick with local news and leave editorials to that “column.”
