On average nationwide, police interventions related to domestic violence rise by 20% in December, compared to other months of the year.
Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center Advocates Charlie Falkis and Brooke Deitchler made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the increase in cases handled by the Center during the holiday season and what some people could do to take back control.
The Center receives more walk-ins during the Holidays. Many may believe this is related to holiday stressors, but many situations of intimate partner violence have been found to relate to the abuser needing control in a time when friends and families are coming together.

Deitchler said although many instances of intimate partner violence come to the surface during this time of year, it is likely the abuse and need for control has been occurring for some time.

For those seeking help, the 24/7 Crisis Line will be available but staff will take a brief break for Christmas.
