News ReleaseDeck access to the Black Mountain Fire Lookout is temporarily closed. Many of the deck boards are compromised by rot and may no longer support a person’s weight. Signs and a barrier are in place until repairs can be made.
For your own safety, do not attempt to enter the closed structure. This action could result in injury. The historic fire lookout was built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of an early wildfire detection system. The trail is open, and people are still able to reach the top and enjoy the view by remaining on the trail.
Recent damage was caused to the building by people breaking into the basement and attempting to break into the lookout. If anyone has information about these incidents, please contact the Tongue Ranger District in Sheridan, Wyoming at 307.674.2600.
