Ron RichterAccording to Sheridan WYO Rodeo Board Executive Director Zane Garstad, this year’s WYO Rodeo broke records for both ticket sales and payout figures. Total ticket sales increased by two-percent from last year with a total of 24,807. The total payout for rodeo events was up 11 percent with a total of $396,671, and World Champion Indian Relay Race prize money was up 19 percent with a total of $86,000. Combined payout for this year was $483,671, representing a 12 percent increase over 2022.
Indian Relay Race Coordinator Jess Sams said adding more money to the purse was a big factor in attracting quality relay teams and first place in the championship race this year paid $19,500. WYO Rodeo Board President Billy Craft said thirty years ago, the total payout for the WYO Rodeo was $40,000, and that the upward trend is a direct result of the combined efforts of the sponsors, volunteers, contract personnel, and the entire community. Planning for the 94th edition of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo has already begun. The dates for the rodeo next year are July 10-13.
