Windshields and Wipers

In an effort to try and avoid unneeded traffic stops, the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind motorists to keep their windshields clear of any snow or ice. Sheriff Allen Thompson said that Wyoming law states that “no person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other material or substance upon or crack within the front windshield, side or rear windows of the vehicle which materially obstructs, obscures or impairs the driver’s clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway.”
Thompson said that state statute also reads that all vehicles with a windshield and an enclosed cab must be equipped with a working windshield wiper for cleaning rain, snow or other moisture from the windshield.

Many vehicles have a recess between the hood and bottom of the windshield into which the wipers basically disappear. This then can fill with snow which many times freezes. This space is difficult to clear with the wipers present. If parked outside, a person can, while the car is running, turn the wipers on and then shut off the engine when the wipers are in a vertical position. When returning to the car that area can be more easily cleared, and the wipers will probably not be “glued” in place.
