Elk Creek Fire Update for Friday 10-11-24
The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office last night asked the community to avoid the Beaver Creek Road area to allow firefighters and other emergency responders to access the area.
While the road was not closed, they asked people to stay clear of the area
According to the Big Horn National Forest: What you saw last night was the interaction of the fires they set reaching a ridge-line and interacting with the wildfire. They know it looked scary, but they looked at it and saw operations working. They will continue to monitor, but the fire is moving together, like waves, with the strategic firing operation from yesterday coming from the top and the main fire body coming from the bottom.
Strategic firing operations may sound scary, but are done to make things safer. Firing operations occur when fire managers want to intentionally reduce the amount of unburned fuel between their indirect fireline and the main fire. This is a carefully planned process, with operations being done in small sections in ideal weather. The intention is to introduce fire and burn it back towards the main fire.
The fire they create significantly reduces the risk of the main fire burning past their firelines, which would threaten communities and other values at risk. Photos from yesterday’s firing operations in the Big Goose Canyon area, which were conducted to cut off the fire’s eastward growth are on the SM Facebook page.
