Both of Wyoming’s U.S. Senators have signed a letter urging the Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to take immediate action in implementing a provision designed to support sugar beet farmers affected by adverse weather. According to a release from the Wyoming Senate Delegation, Senators Mike Enzi and John Barrasso have joined a bipartisan group of senators in to support Sugar Beet Farmers.

In the letter, the group highlighted the devastation for cooperative farmers working in Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming over the past two years. In the final two years of the last decade, regions across those states experienced freezing temperatures earlier than the beets are typically harvested. The Senators suggest the USDA take immediate action in implementing the sugar beet eligibility provisions that were passed in the Fiscal Year 2020 Appropriations bill as a part of the Wildfire, Hurricane, and Indemnity Program Plus. The senators from each of the aforementioned states affected have also signed onto this initiative.
