They'll also discuss the importance of open spaces to our community’s economy and culture now and into the future. Attendees are encouraged to join in with questions and discussion. In recognition of the centennial anniversary of its late founder, Raymond Plank, Ucross will host its inaugural Founder’s Day event for the public on Saturday, June 4. Starting at 11 a.m., the community is invited to tour the artist residency campus, get a behind-the-scenes look at the studio spaces, meet artists and enjoy a picnic outside of the historic Big Red Ranch House. The event will conclude at 2 p.m. with a tribute to Plank; a preview of the Ucross Art Gallery, which is currently undergoing renovation; and a major announcement about Ucross’s 40th Anniversary plans. Stoked will be onsite slinging the food truck’s wood-fired pizzas, or guests are welcome to pack a picnic. Parking is limited, and carpooling is encouraged. This exhibit is curated by artist and leather worker James F. Jackson who is a National Endowment for the Arts 2019 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, 2019 Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award recipient and The Brinton Museum’s resident leatherworker. Included by invitation are 10 “best in their field” leather artists from North America and 15 “best in their field” contemporary leather artists from Japan with one Japan artist residing in California. A color-illustrated catalog - printed in both English and Japanese - with an article by Jim Jackson and biographical information on each participating artist accompanies this show. Master Leather Carving from North America and Japan –Design and Cultural Influences looks at traditional carving and the cross-cultural influences of Sheridan-style carving on Japanese leather artisans along with a wide diversity of Japanese contemporary work. This exhibition is scheduled to open during the time of the annual Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show in Sheridan.
