Sheridan Broncs and Tongue River Lady Eagles win State Track Titles / Troopers Split With Billings Scarlets / Rockies Walk off v D-Backs

STATE TRACK AND FIELD – The all-class Wyoming state track and field championships wrapped up Saturday in Casper

The Sheridan Broncs got the team victory for the broncs first state title in 52 years the Lady Broncs were 6^th it was also a great weekend for the Big Horn and Tongue River teams as the Lady Eagles were crowned 2-A state champs.

Success has been hard to come by during the past 33 years for the Tongue River girls track and field team, but this year, the Lady Eagles left nothing to chance.

TR had runners place first, second and third, in the 100 meter dash, won 8 events total and was runner-up in a total of 3 events, to win their first 2a state title since 1988.

The Lady Eagles scored 158 points in the 3-day state meet. the next closest team was Glenrock with 81.5 points.

Freshman Addie Pendergast won 3 events (800 meter run (2 minutes 20.02 seconds), 100 meter dash (13.03 seconds), 400 meter dash (56.99 seconds…best time in all classes)) and was part of the 1600 sprint medley relay team which finished in 1st place (4 minutes 19.03 seconds…other runners were Jazlyn Ryan, Katy Kalasinsky and Jane Pendergast).

Junior Carleigh Reish won 3 events also. they were the long jump (17 feet), the high jump (5 feet) and the 200 meter dash (27.49 seconds). she was also runner-up in the 100 meter dash.

TR’s 4 by 400 meter relay team (Maddy Hill, Katy kKlasinsky, Jazlyn Ryan, and Jane Pendergast) also placed first with a time of 4 minutes 23.18 seconds.

On top of 2 winning relay teams, Junior Jane Pendergast was runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.24 seconds.

Sophomore Grace Sopko was runner-up in the triple jump, with a jump of 31 feet 8.75 inches.

Between 1988 and 2021, the best the Lady Eagles had finished with 4th place in 1989, 1990, 2008 and 2010.

Trailing by 1 point to rival Tongue River going into the final race (the 4 by 400 meter relay), the Big Horn boys track and field team left all of their opponents behind, to finish as 2A state runner-ups.

Riley Green, Bryce Morris, Dawson Richards, and Carson Bates combined for a time of 3 minutes 42.93 seconds, for the rams only win at the state meet.

5 other runner-up finishes helped BH’s cause.

Senior Carson Bates was runner-up in both the 100 meter dash (11.65 seconds, losing via photo finish) and the 200 meter dash (24.03 seconds).

Senior Will Huckeba was runner-up in the 400 meter dash (51.00 seconds), and Junior Josh Thompson was runner-up in the shot put (46 feet 9.75 inches).

Big Horn was also runner-up in the 4 by 800 meter relay (Ethan Alliot, Cade Butler, Jacob Brogdon and A.J. Moline…9 minutes 15.19 seconds).

The Rams were state champs in 2019. there was no season in 2020 due to the covid pandemic.

The BH girls team placed 5th at the state meet Senior Ameila Gee won the shot put, with a throw of 35 feet 10 inches.

STATE SOCCER – The Wyoming state soccer championships finished up Saturday the Broncs lost in the third place game 2-1 vs KW the Lady Broncs dropped the consolation final 2-0 vs Cheyenne East.

TROOPER BASEBALL – The Sheridan Troopers split with the Billings Scarlets Sunday the Scarlets took the first game 6-3 the Troops came back to win the second game 9-7.

Head coach Ben Phillips says they couldn’t get a break in the first game with several hard hit balls right at the defense.

This weekend they will play five game at a tournament in Gillette and will be nice to get several more opportunities to play back to back games.

And Phillips says once June starts fans are going to have fun coming out to the ball park to watch the Troopers play.

ROCKIES BASEBALL – The Colorado Rockies swept Arizona winning on a walk off homer from Trevor Story Sunday afternoon.

They play at the New York Mets tonight, first pitch 5:10 on Smart Talk 106.3 FM.
