The Sheridan Bronc Football team will play on the road for the first time this season as the team plays at Thunder Basin tomorrow.

The 2 teams played each other twice last year at both places, with Sheridan winning the regular season matchup and in the semi-finals.

Head Jeff Mowry says the Bolts had a much tougher season opening test last week, even though the team lost at Natrona.

What concerns him is the one taking the snaps, as TB’s QB is both a runner and thrower.

“They threw the ball 21 times, completed 13 of them, but they’re a run first team. Quarterback is very athletic. He rushed for almost 100 yards last week and had the lone score for Thunder Basin against Natrona and they’re a physical running downhill team and so we really got to make sure that we’re gap sound on defense and we’re tackling low and making sure we’re getting on their legs because they’re big and strong.”

Kickoff in Gillette is scheduled for 6pm.

Big Horn will start the season on the road tomorrow against a familiar non-conference opponent from the 2A West.

Lovell has defeated BH in the season opening game in each of the past 2 seasons, although the Rams avenged both of those losses in the postseason.

Coach Kirk McLaughlin says the Bulldogs should present another great test to start the season, and expects the opposition to try some different stuff this time around, compared to past games, because they got the players to pull it off.

“I don’t know their running back situation, but I know they got a great group of receivers and a great quarterback, so they might be wanting to throw the ball a little bit more and I know that quarterback is going to be a big part of their running game, but they’ll still have some their staples that they’ve had for the last several years too, because they’ve got a big strong offensive line, so there will be a running game presence, but I think they got the athletes to throw it through the air too.”

Kickoff in Lovell is scheduled for 6pm.

Tongue River will also be on the road tomorrow against a 2A West opponent.

The Eagles visit Thermopolis and have a goal of doing a better job than they did last week, when they were shutout at home by the Sheridan JV team.

In hindsight, last week’s game did not mean much because it was not a conference game, but Coach Steve Hanson says the team did not take that approach and the players learned a lot about themselves.

“We’re breaking in a new crop of guys at almost every position that we haven’t counted on in the past. There were a lot of guys that we were thinking would be 2-way players, that we learned are not quite ready for that mantle yet. Fourteen penalties and 4 turnovers, that sums up the game. We had young guys trying to get off the ball fast, a little too fast at times and we committed 4 turnovers and still came out in a pretty good showing. After a win, you’re never as good as you think you are, when you check the tape and then a loss, you’re certainly never as bad as you think you are, and I think that’s what we learned.”

Kickoff in Thermopolis is scheduled for 6pm.
