The 2024 lacrosse season for the Sheridan Mavericks and Lady Mavericks got off to a chilly and wet start, but it produced some desirable results.

Playing in Great Falls, Montana, the boys defeated the host team and last year’s Montana D2 State Runners-Up 9-3 and also beat Butte 14-4 to start the season with a 2-0 record.

The team is in its 3rd year of existence in the Montana High School Lacrosse Association.

Head Coach JR Wright says both he and the team have high expectations this year, because not only did the team lose very little to graduation, they have more players coming on board.

“We’re at 28 right now on the varsity roster. Got a lot of returning players, just about everybody came back from last year, so that’s great. We can just keep building on what we’ve been building here for the last 5 years now going I guess. Got a lot of experienced guys, we’ve had more people it seems like move here to Sheridan who have had experience playing in other places like Colorado and so we’re getting to take advantage of some other clubs’ development too.”

The next 2 games for the Mavericks are on Saturday, April 13th in Helena, MT.

The team will play 2 home games this season on Friday April 19th vs. Cody and on Saturday, April 20th vs. Helena.

The Lady Mavericks split their opening weekend games in Helena, MT, losing to Bozeman 8-4 and then defeated Billings 9-8.

This is the 2nd year for the team.

Head Coach Brianna Scholl says the word is starting to get out that there’s a girls team in Sheridan, and things are looking a little bit better this year early on.

“We have 15 girls this year, which is great, because you need 12 to field a girls lacrosse team, so it’s great that we can actually play a full team if we need to and have some subs. Last year we only had 11 and 10 by the end of the season, so we had to play short a lot of times with no subs, but the good thing is the girls get conditioning in and they enjoy the playing and it’s a lot of fun. It’s a good experience for them.”

The Lady Mavericks are next scheduled to play in Billings, MT on Friday, April 12th vs. Missoula, and on Saturday, April 13th vs. the Rimrock JV and Helena.
