Gail Dent Crockett, age 74, of Sheridan passed away in mid-April 2024 at peace and without suffering.

Gail was born in Sheridan in December 1949 to Beverly and Jerry Dent. She is survived by her three sisters, one brother, two daughters, a granddaughter Viola Schuehly, and a grandson Harley Pennington.

Gail attended Orofino High School in northern Idaho, where she met and later married Doug Crockett. At the University of Idaho in Moscow, ID, she was an active member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and discovered her love for French and weaving. The first love led her to take a life-changing trip to Quebec and later experiences as a French teacher, while the second led her to purchase a loom, found a Handweavers’ Guild, and give many teaching demonstrations of weaving at fairs and cultural events in the years that followed. Gail and Doug welcomed two daughters, Sara and Dinah, into the world.

After moving to Seattle, Gail obtained a degree in Library Science from the University of Washington and accepted her first position at the University of Houston-Victoria Library in South Texas. She would support thousands of students and library patrons over the next 35 years as a reference librarian and Head of Technical Services. She was admired by those who knew her for her keen intelligence, attention to detail, and sense of humor.

In later life, Gail enjoyed being part of the Episcopalian church congregation and especially singing in the choir. Her resilience carried her through many tough times, including the loss of her sister Jeri in 2017 and Dinah and Sara’s father Doug in 2018. Over these years, however, she proudly celebrated her daughters’ graduations, the birth of two grandchildren, and the many small triumphs that bring joy to daily life. Although her final years were shadowed by poor health, her fighting spirit and sense of humor stayed with her to the very end. That spirit surely would have carried her into the next century, but her body sought rest. Her family and friends wish Gail well on the next phase of her spiritual journey!

Gail is survived by her daughters Dinah and Sara Crockett, sisters Cindy Baker, Shelly Rockstad, and Heather Beddes, and brother Steve Rank. The family particularly wishes to express their gratitude to Cascades Assisted Living and Sheridan Memorial Hospital staff for their help and support throughout this time. Per Gail’s wishes, there will be no funeral, and she will be interred with her parents at Moore Hill Cemetery near Hulett. Memories of Gail may be shared by sending a card care of Cindy Baker, P.O. Box 4053, Sheridan, WY, 82801.
