Irv was a rancher, a horseman, and a world-class cowboy – in the arena and on the range. His life was built around cattle and horses and a love of this land and its people. He loved dogs, bird hunting, fishing, and rodeo. He was an avid reader and poet. He sang old cowboy songs, knew countless poems by heart, and loved a good joke. He was a master storyteller and he loved to dance. Irv was wise, funny, and kind. He always saw the best in people. He was devoted to his friends, his community, and especially his family.

In place of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Northern Plains Resource Council. Irv’s first and main love was always Bones Brothers Ranch, and the grass, the land, and the waters that sustain it. Irv was proud that the Northern Plains Resource Council had its beginnings in his living room, and that Northern Plains has been vital to preserving and protecting Montana’s working landscapes and ranches like ours. http://northernplains.org/donate *Please note that your donation is in memory of Irv Alderson.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 – 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Equestrian Center.

Online condolences may be written at www.kanefuneral.com. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Irv on the Ranch’s books for 20 years and always looked forward to him coming in. I meet Irv a long time before that and have enjoyed his cowboy wit and pleasant personality. He will be greatly missed by everyone and especially his family.
    Rest in peace Irv.

Irv was the cowboy laureate of the country. He represented everything good about ranching, rodeo and Western life. A Southern gentleman, poet, scholar, family man. A good friend to so many. He lifted the spirits of everyone he contact with.

Irv is the reason my quality of life is so good today. And I got to tell him that on one of our visits out to Birney not long ago. He give this lost kid a job and a purpose. His family are the most best people I ever knew. Fond memories working there and spending time with his family. He has a great ride up there T The Wonder Horse if he needs to deal with a crises out side. Charlie waiting to trip a steer. Ride on Cowboy. Not a day goes by we don’t think of you and your fine family.

Big Bones, Little Bones, Fran, Irv and Alan[Pud] were all my heroes when I grew up in Birney. Later in life Irv would come by my cabin in Birney and have a snort and tell me stories and gave me a million insights. I smile just thinking of the little time I had but am so glad he took the time to be a friend. The good news is he will never die in our hearts. Adios my friend

What a fine gentleman he was. It was always a pleasure to visit with him about books, or to listen to him tell a story. May you take comfort in the memories and legacy he has left for you.

This picture of Irv captures the essence of the Wyoming/Montana cowboy. He was my Uncle Irv. His smile, his intelligence, his storytelling, his zest for life…he had it all, and we will miss him.

Somewhat belatedly, I’am writing to say how very sad I was to hear of Irv’s passing. He was such a delightful character, with a great sense of humour — and my brother in law for a brief time. I send my love and condolences to all his family.
