Victoria Taberna Washut of Sheridan passed away on January 21, 2024, at age 98.

She was born July 21, 1925, in Buffalo, Wyoming to John and Magdalena Taberna.

She graduated from Johnson County High School in 1943. She married George A. Washut at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church by Reverend A. H. Grannan on May 22, 1946, in Buffalo, Wyoming.

They had four children, Michael George Washut of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Stephen Paul of Sheridan, Wyoming, Cecilia Mary of Broadus, Montana and Mathew Frank Washut of Billings, Montana.

She worked for several local businesses in Sheridan, retiring from Renew at age 65. She spent her retirement volunteering at Sheridan Memorial Hospital serving as Head of the Blood program. She has spent these past years as a volunteer in the Wyoming Room at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

Her Basque heritage was very important to her. The family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains that was not far from the original land that she grew up in was precious. The time spent and memories created there with family are even more so.

Vicki was a kind and compassionate woman who always thought of others first. But, she always had a little sass with a lot of fire. “Grandma” always let you know how it was going to be. She always had the best stories, talking about her life, her Basque heritage, or her family. We will miss her stories more than words can express.

Her husband, George preceded her in death in 2000 her mother, Magdelena in 1983, her father John in 1955, her brothers Joseph Taberna, and Louis Taberna, and her two sisters Mary Chrispen and Cecilia Morgenstern of California. Also, the Washut family, parents George and Eva Washut, sister Mary Guesanburu, Agnes Kobielusz, and brother Joe Washut.

She is survived by her four children and their families, Michael (Kathy) Washut, Steve (Judy) Washut, Cecilia (Matt) Earley, and Matt (Karen) Washut, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, half-brother John Taberna of Idaho, half-sister, Leah Taberna of Oregon, and many nieces and nephews.

Donations can be made to the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, 335 W. Alger, Sheridan, WY 82801. A special thank you to the kind, caring, compassionate people at Green House Living who took care of her.

A Public Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 10:00 am at Holy Name Catholic Church. Rosary will begin at 10:30 am with Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:00 am with Father Glenn Whewell officiating immediately followed by a lunch reception in the Parish Hall.
