Wyoming’s total population grew to nearly 579,000 residents in 2019, according to estimates recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

From July of 2018 to July of 2019, Wyoming’s population increased by almost 1,200 people after declining for three consecutive years.

According to a release from the Wyoming State Administrative and Information Office’s Economic Analysis Division, the natural increase in population (6,601 births less 4,971 deaths) was 1,630, but estimated net migration was about -470, which means that 470 more residents left Wyoming than moved into the State during the same time.

The estimated population of the US as a whole was estimated at 328.2 million in 2019, up a half a percentage point from the previous year.

The areas with the highest increase in population were Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, with 40 states and the District of Columbia showing increases in population.

Ten states, including West Virginia, Alaska, Illinois, and New York lost population during the same 12-month period.

Wyoming’s rebounding economy is thought to be a driver in the growth in population, with the petroleum industry leading the charge.

Construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, and transportation services also contributed to economic growth.
