Earlier this week the Patriot Conservatives of Johnson County (PCJC) filed a lawsuit against the Buffalo Bulletin seeking damages for libel and defamation of character, stemming from advertisements the newspaper printed that the group claims is full of untrue statements.

David Iverson, chairman of the PCJC, sat down with Sheridan Media to talk about the advertisement and why they chose to file the lawsuit.

Iverson said the ad has untrue statements, which they believe is libel, and that it is defamatory because they believe the ad’s purpose is to impugn the character of the group.

Also, they believe the paper (1) is guilty of violating the Wyoming Constitution by “not attempting to verify the facts or to get comments from the (PCJC)” and (2) that the political ad had no disclosure of who paid for the ad, as is required for political advertising.

The lawsuit is seeking two separate monetary damage awards, one for $150,000 for direct damages to the PCJC, and $36 million.

Iverson explained why they were seeking the $36 million.

Iverson said everyone has first amendment protections to speak their mind, but with that right comes responsibility.

He said, “everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but we all have a responsibility for that freedom of speech.”

Intimidation by lawsuit, class act. You won, give it a rest.

A more complete summary might have educated the reader as to what the actual advertisement said which this group is saying is untrue. I would like to see more lawsuits against the media for printing lies,,half truths and incomplete sets of facts as they promote their one agenda or another. Not sure this is the case this time because the writer didn’t give the information needed.

I don’t send people to the Cowboy State Daily- but they’ve got some fairly indepth coverage on this.

The fact that you have the farmers market listed on your “events calendar” does tend to undercut your libel complaint. And having read your 12 point ” contract” I can only conclude that it would be impossible to defame you beyond what your own homophobic, misogynistic, racist and frankly semi-literate screed have already done.
As a side note, I wish someone on the right would actually read “The 1619 Project” and the basic tenants of Critical Race Theory, instead of just accepting what Tucker Carlson says about it (I’m looking at you here Ms. Balow).
I’m tempted to encourage everyone to go to the PCJC website, but don’t do it on a full stomach.

It’s about time citizens held the media accountable.

I agree 100%….but this isn’t one of those times. The article in The Bulletin only reported what was true, nothing false. Just because the facts are damning to your cause doesn’t give you the right to implicate the media. When this lawsuit gets thrown out, I hope there is a counter-sue for defamation.

But everything in the newspaper article was true. Just because the truth doesn’t fit your agenda, you decide to sue? And where in the article was an election mentioned? Complete nonsense.

Would like to hear from someone with a legal background on liability on a newspaper for the content of a paid advertisement.

Again- as much as I question most of Cow Boy State Daily’s work, the coverage of this issue was good. (The basic response was that the “patriots” have picked a near impossible hill to climb.)
