Wyoming Game and Fish confirmed the finding of an American bullfrog at Kleenburn Pound north of Sheridan in 2018.

The finding led to a herpetologist (a zoologist who studies reptiles and amphibians) to conduct a survey in the Sheridan region to determine if there were more in the area. That survey determined that there are large numbers of the American bullfrogs at Mavrakis Pond and several sites along Big Goose Creek.

An invasive species in Wyoming, American bullfrogs are native to the eastern United States. Wyoming lacks predators accustomed to feeding on bullfrogs and the invasive species can quickly overwhelm the area and put native amphibians at risk.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schimdt told listeners a few reasons bullfrogs can damage the ecosystem in the region.

C. Schmidt

Wyoming Game and Fish is attempting to develop a map of locations containing bullfrog confirmation. G&F asks that if found, mark the location on a GPS and notify the G&F office at 672-7418.

According to Schmidt, it is mating season for the bullfrogs. The best way to find a bullfrog is to listen, she said. The American bullfrog is much larger than native amphibians and emits a bull-like bellow. To familiarize yourself with the call of a bullfrog, click here.

I just hope fish and game doesn’t do anything foolish like Idaho has. Please don’t use chemicals to help eliminate invasive bullfrogs.
