It takes a village

The Veteran Village Project will offer a chance for residents and visitors to enjoy a laugh and learn a little more about veterans all while raising funds for the Veteran Village.

Veteran’s Village interim Executive Director Kristen Marcus told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse her vision of the Veteran Village.

K. Marcus

As of January 8, 2021, Marcus knew of 70 homeless veterans living in Sheridan County. But she knows there’s probably more out there. Many veterans elect not to register into the Veterans’ Administration and not to join veteran’s groups. Many of these veterans worry that asking for help will burden someone else or due to post traumatic stress and depression, no longer feel that they are worth the help others wish to give.

Marcus conceived an idea and formed a board of like minded friends to help. The idea was to build up to 50 small homes that will provide homeless veterans a place to live and recuperate. She hopes to one day include counseling services, volunteer opportunities to help reintegrate vets into the community and job training and placement opportunities. If all goes according to plan, this will be the Veteran Village.

The Veteran Village Benefit Event with Special Guest Michael Pritchard will be at the WYO Theater on July 1, beginning at 7 p.m. The event will feature performances by Dugan Irby, Rowan Heil, and Paul Clark. Tickets are $10 and proceeds will help to create the village.
