Pat BlairA couple of months ago, Sheridan County School District 1 trustees changed the school calendar for this academic year, to accommodate a regional basketball tournament in February.
Big Horn High School was originally to have hosted the tournament on Feb. 25, 26 and 27, and because Feb. 25 is a school day, trustees canceled school that day and called for school on Nov. 20 – a Friday, normally a day of no school on the district’s four-day schedule.
School District 1 Superintendent Pete Kilbride elaborated.
But, Kilbride said, because of COVID-19, the Wyoming High School Activities Association has changed the regional format this year. He said the teams will play in quadrants, with four teams playing in each of four separate locations.
What that means for Big Horn is that no games will be played there on Thursday or Friday. Big Horn High School will host the regional third and fourth-place games and the championship game on Saturday.
But as a result of that change, Feb. 25 will be a regular school day in Big Horn, and students won’t need to attend classes on Nov. 20.
In their meeting earlier this month, District 1 trustees formally reverted to their original calendar for the school year.
